Roles for Cruise Data Management
Data Coordinator (on shore)
Operates a "data hotline" for the chief scientist for troubleshooting any data problems. Delegates tasks to the data team as necessary. Facilitates communication between the chief scientist and the rest of the team (leaves voice messages, explains problems and symptoms over email, etc.)
Tasks that the DC is responsible for (perhaps through delegation):
Administers the end-to-end data delivery systems. Works with ship's MTs to set up the interface between the appliance and the ship's network. Works with MTs and the Data Liaison (below) to troubleshoot connectivity, application, and telemetry problems during the cruise.
Data Liaison (on each vessel)
The DL is the vessel is the on-vessel extension of the DC. They will help the DC test connectivity, resolve problems that require physical access (e.g., reboot the appliance), put the DC in touch with the MTs, etc. This role need not be filled by someone with technical/programming skills, but should be when berthing and personnel constraints allow it. Per Lydie: This role may often be filled by the chief scientist, but this should be made explicit.
