Frequently Asked Questions

What is NANOOS?

An integral part of the emerging U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System, the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) is a regional association charged with the development and maintenance of an observing system for the Pacific Northwest. Point of contact

What is the NANOOS Pilot?

The NANOOS Pilot Project is a competitively funded IOOS activity, focused on the development of technologies for estuaries and beaches, with primary application to the Pacific Northwest. Point of contact Partner institutions. Principal Investigators.

How can I get involved?

We welcome your involvement in the NANOOS Pilot Project, and in NANOOS in general. As a user, you can let us know of your information needs, thus influencing NANOOS functionality and products. If you collect data, we can help you disseminate that data

What is the source of funding for NANOOS?

IOOS has competitively funded NANOOS management activities and the NANOOS Pilot Project. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) manages both awards, which have limited duration. Longer-term funding for IOOS and regional efforts such as NANOOS are being considered at national level.

Does NANOOS award grants for local efforts?

Not at this time. It is expected that IOOS regional associations such as NANOOS will competitively award grants for components of the IOOS observing system at some later date.

I would like to install a monitoring station in the Oregon, Washington or northern California Coast. How can NANOOS help me?

We encourage you to contact us prior to installation, as we may be able to make suggestions and provide technical advice. You will need to buy the equipment, and arrange for its installation and maintenance. If you meet NANOOS requirements in hardware, software, and maintenance, we will display (in real-time, if allowed by your hardware/software set-up), archive, quality control, and distribute your data, free of charge. Please contact nanoospilot@ccalmr.ogi.edu.

How can I contribute my observations, forecasts, or technology to NANOOS?

Please contact nanoospilot@ccalmr.ogi.edu., with a description of your data and current quality control, metadata and dissemination strategies.

I want to use NANOOS information. How can I influence how the information is presented?

Send a description of your information needs to nanoospilot@ccalmr.ogi.edu.. Include specific products of interest, if appropriate. We will consider all requests and suggestions, and we will attempt to address them as resources allow. However, we can not guarantee implementation or timing. If you do have funds or other resources that you can contribute towards meeting your information needs, also let us know.
