[OHSU] [OGI] [ESE] Center for Coastal And Land-Margin Research
  About CCALMR
Mission

The Center for Coastal and Land-Margin Research (CCALMR) of the OGI School of Science & Engineering at the Oregon Health & Science University addresses, through advances in scientific understanding, technology and education, society's need to manage increased development and manipulation of coasts and land-margins while preserving and enhancing their environmental integrity, and protecting human populations from natural and man-made hazards.

Topics in Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction

Science and natural resource management in the lower Columbia River

Organization

The Center for Coastal and Land-Margin Research (CCALMR) is an interdisciplinary research center within the Department of Environmental & Biomolecular Systems (EBS) of the OGI School of Science & Engineering (OGI) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Dr. António M. Baptista is the Director of CCALMR.

Purpose

Through interdisciplinary research, graduate education and advanced technology development, CCALMR addresses society's need for better scientific understanding of coasts, land margins and estuaries. Improved knowledge of these complex systems is necessary to preserve and enhance their environmental integrity, maintain the economic viability of communities dependent on them and protect human populations from natural and man-made hazards.

Real-world scientific, engineering and natural resource management issues motivate CCALMR research and education activities. Drawing on the experience of professionals in the public and private sectors, CCALMR researchers identify critical scientific research challenges creating obstacles to improved management. This insight strongly influences the design of research investigations, the development of supporting tools and applications and the transfer of knowledge and technology to meet the needs of scientists, engineers and managers with decision-making responsibilities.

Featured Projects

CCALMR's interdisciplinary research projects often involve multiple investigators and address multiple research issues. Some of the CCALMR's current and recently completed projects include the following.

Scientific Research Interests

CCALMR researchers conduct leading-edge research in several scientific disciplines, including the following.

Education

CCALMR blends traditional and innovative educational approaches to transfer scientific knowledge on coasts and land-margins. CCALMR education programs are intrinsically interdisciplinary, in both course content and research opportunities.

CCALMR students earn M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science and Engineering; OGI has no undergraduate degree program. Admission to OGI requires completion of a formal application process. Graduate Research Assistantships providing a stipend and/or tuition scholarship may be available to qualified students, particularly at the Ph.D. level. For further information on degree programs and financial aid, consult the departmental and institutional guidelines. Prospective students are encouraged to contact any CCALMR faculty to discuss education, research and financial support opportunities.

In addition to degree programs, CCALMR conducts a variety of short courses and training workshops, both on the OGI campus and at remote sites.

Software and Data

CCALMR distributes several software packages through its Software Affiliates program. Software is currently available for grid generation, scientific visualization, and numerical circulation simulation from the CORIE software portal.

Graphical representations of hydrologic and atmospheric conditions on the Lower Columbia River are available through CCALMR's CORIE web site. CCALMR's current policy is to make case-by-case decisions on requests to release electronic files of data gathered in its research projects, including CORIE.

Employment Opportunities and Student Recruitment

CCALMR announces faculty and staff job openings and student recruitment initiatives on its web site. Check current postings.
